Museum of Emotion

Unknown Island

Professor: William MacDonald

The "Museum of Emotion" design is inspired by the film "The Legend of 1900." This project is an exploratory design study aimed at abandoning reality to return to abstraction, creating a space where people can find tranquility and connect with their emotions. The emotions depicted in the film include solitude, calmness, and enjoyment, set against the backdrop of 1900, playing the piano alone in the third-class lounge during the night. The film's scenes use mottled light and shadow to evoke a sense of loneliness. However, 1900 does not feel downcast due to solitude; on the contrary, he relishes in the solitary nights spent playing the piano. This is the emotion conveyed by the scene: solitude, tranquility, and enjoyment.

The entire scene creates a sense of loneliness through light and shadow, the characters' stillness, and the camera's movement. It is filled with loneliness yet calmness and enjoyment. This design will blend the feelings of loneliness and tranquility, using light and shadow to create an emotional museum.

To begin with, the entire film sequence is divided into frames. By conducting an in-depth study of the camera movements within these frames, we can derive an initial design for the spatial form. This process involves replicating the camera's movement, thereby emulating the changes in the light source within each frame. As a result, we create a dynamic trajectory of the light source.

This trajectory of the light source is akin to transforming the soft piano sounds into a visual format. It intertwines sound and sight within the space, offering viewers a novel sensory experience. Such a design recreates the film's ambiance and adds dynamism and rhythm to the space, making it more vivid and captivating. By doing so, we pay homage to the cinematic source and innovate in translating auditory elements into visual and spatial experiences. This approach opens up new possibilities in design, where the fusion of different sensory elements can create a more immersive and emotionally resonant environment.
