Farragut Housing

RE:AL Estate Event Selected Project

Brooklyn, New York

Teamate: Wandong Xue
Professor: James Garrison

The Farragut Housing Program, a government-affiliated affordable housing program in New York, faces the problem of providing housing but lacks opportunities for stable income and jobs for its residents. From an architectural perspective, the site is large but lacks a connection between buildings. To address this, the main objective of this project is to establish connections between the buildings, promoting a sense of community and unity among tenants. Additional living units can be created by connecting each building to alleviate population concerns. Community facilities will also be proposed alongside the connections to provide job opportunities for residents—connections not only bridge buildings but also different social classes by introducing commercial stores within the site. Improving the site conditions will be an additional benefit of creating these connections.

Converging Pathways: Enhancing Community with Accessible Design

The design of this project incorporates multiple entrances on the site to provide easy access for people passing through. The site's location, adjacent to two schools and the Navy Yard, allows for connecting different social classes to converge on the site. These entrances also provide an opportunity to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors. By promoting accessibility and community interaction, the project aims to enhance the overall site experience for everyone.

Materiality of Farragut Housing Renovation

Building upon the this renovation project, the exterior facade of the existing building is currently composed of a brick wall. However, in order to maximize the outdoor space available, the new renovation design will propose the addition of balcony spaces for the building’s occupants.
